do you feel a cold coming on, say around Thursday?

Okay, in a little bit more than 48 hrs, the madness will begin.  Office production may take a little decline, but we have been declining for months anyway, so what the hell a little more won't hurt.  Lunch hours will be extended, for those who get a lunch break!  Streaming on line will go up, if you have uninhibited internet access.  And finally, sick time use may be on the rise, again, if you have paid sick time.  And this is all for what?  Three weekends of blow-outs or close games; high profile student-athletes, okay, maybe just athletes, making unbelievable plays, one that this short white guy can only dream about.  Students cutting classes to travel to distant places for one, maybe two games to cheer on their future alma maters, and never forgetting the experience of being there.  How do I know?  Well 40+ years ago, I and four other classmates, made the trip from Dayton to New York to take in the UD Flyers in the '68 NIT.  Back then, the NCAA only took in 20 or so teams and those "on  the bubble" got invited to the NIT, at Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York. Thought we would be there for a weekend, or a game.  Turned out we stayed all tournament long; missed just one class (how is another story) and celebrated UD's win over Kansas on a St. Pat's weekend in NYC.  Now that was a college class that I got no credit!  So, let the games begin and I will turn my head when my son says he is going to BeeDubs for a game, even if the game is at Noon on Thursday!!  Good Luck to all.

  1. Sad to say, this is probably the last NIT, with the expansion to 96 (97?) next year, the pickings will probably be too slim to sustain the NIT. I, too, have some fond memories of the NIT, not from being there, though. WHenever the U of MN is in the NIT, they get to have a couple more home games. The big hitters, with the great seats, don't condescend to attending the lowly NIT games, so my son and I get great, center-court, seats to see the Gophers play some of the future best teams in the country...many years teams that excel in the NIT go on to great NCAA post seasons in the year following. I remember two NIT's: The 1980, when the Gophers were beaten in the championship by Virginia, and their 3-time All-American center, soon-to-be NBA great, Ralph Sampson (whose son currently plays for the Gophers...11:25 am Friday), and the 1997, where the Gophers went all the way, beating Georgetown, unfortunately with Clem Haskins, who managed to have his entire record stripped from the books. This year, if we're lucky, we get beat in the second round of the NCAA, where we probably could have made it to The Garden in the NIT. Oh, well...

  2. Wasn't there some kind of misunderstanding between the GG and Bucks a few years back? Kinda remember some foot stomping music took place on someone's head!! Also wasn't the coach of UofM a pro coach in C'Town later on? Yes, I do know all the answers, but makes for good conversation!
